Where we come from, a ground beef sandwich with a flavorful sauce was called a Sloppy Joe. Living in Colorado and influenced by our beloved Iowa neighbors (love ya’ll!), I learned that the Maid Rite Sandwich is a Sloppy Joe, without the tomato base. Both delicious, but since living in CO, our family has adopted a liking to this more Iowa style of sandwich. Although I cannot figure out why it is spelled this way, we will try to do “rite” by the Iowan tradition. (Also my neighbor corrected my original spelling of this as “Made Rite”.)
Regardless of spelling, this sandwich is comfort food at its finest, with a mustard and vinegar base, you can add your favorite seasonings to make it your own. The result is a delicious and hearty sandwich which satisfies. I am not sure if our style makes the Iowa list, but over the last few years, the Maid Rite made “our way”, has become a family favorite.
The Simple Ingredient List
This sandwich is perfect for a weeknight meal or made in large quantity for a group. The ingredients include ground beef, olive oil, chopped yellow onion, garlic cloves, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, beef stock, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. You will also need to have buns of your choice. We prefer a sesame wheat bun for ours, but many options would be perfect.
Making a Maid Rite Sandwich
Initially, you can finely chop about 1/2 of a yellow onion. Warm 2 T olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Then, add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Add ground beef and begin to crumble and brown it. Add pressed garlic cloves as you cook the ground beef and onion together. Once it is about 75% done cooking, add smoked paprika, salt and pepper. Combine the flavors together and cook for 2-3 minutes. Next, add 3 T Dijon mustard and 4 T Worcestershire sauce, then stir to combine. Lastly, add the 3/4 cup beef stock. Allow this to simmer for 15 minutes for liquid to boil down. Serve warm on a bun.
Serving Suggestions
- Good and easy side dishes to serve with the Maid Rite include mac and cheese (box or homemade), tater tots, or even potato chips. Obviously, a total kid pleasing meal with these sides.
- We also have these with a side salad or simple veggie (Simple Roasted Broccoli works great!)
- If you do not have Dijon mustard, you can use regular mustard.
- You can double or triple this recipe and keep warm in a crock pot for an easy main dish for larger gatherings.

I’m putting this on my list of recipes to try out. Looks so good…I might have had a version of this in Iowa at a cafe, I think they called it a “loose meat sandwich” and it was pretty good. Thanks for sharing these recipes.
Yes, I have heard it referred to that as well! I think “made rite” just sounds better!😊 Hope you enjoy it.
