This pumpkin apple spice mule is a perfect signature cocktail for fall festivities.  We have been serving it for our annual pre-trick or treat party for several years, and it is always a hit.  Initially, I was looking for inspiration for a fun party drink when I came across the Pumpkin Spice Vodka by Pinnacle.  Combining this seasonal flavored vodka with apple cider, ginger beer, and nutmeg results in a sweet, refreshing drink full of fall flavors.

Why is it called a “mule” anyway?:  Turns out there are several theories on why the original Moscow Mule, created in Hollywood in the 1940s, is called a mule….My favorite is that Moscow is referencing Vodka’s origin and the term mule refers to how ginger beer with it’s zesty flavor can provide a “kick” like a mule.

Pumpkin Apple Spice Mule Ingredients

The recipe is simple! Pumpkin spice vodka, apple cider, ginger beer, ground nutmeg and ice. For those of you thinking, “Why should I commit to purchasing an entire bottle of specialty vodka for this cocktail?”  Easy- you can serve this drink all of fall, so between Halloween gatherings, football parties, and Thanksgiving, the bottle will be gone by Christmas!

How to Make this Mule

First, fill a shaker with ice.  Pour 2 ounces of pumpkin spice vodka into the shaker. Then add 1 1/2 ounces of apple cider. Shake this until the shaker is ice cold. Fill a copper mug or favorite cocktail glass with ice. Pour the shaken vodka and cider into the glass. Then, pour ginger beer to fill the cup (about 4-5 ounces). Give the cocktail a quick stir.  Top with a slice of green or red apple and ground nutmeg.  If desired, add a sprig of rosemary and a cinnamon stick for visual appeal.
