Gruyère Scalloped Potato Ingredients

This recipe is flexible regarding which potatoes to choose, however, we prefer small, golden potatoes- 1 1/4 lbs. You will also need 4-5 ounces of Gruyère cheese, 1 cup of heavy whipping cream, 2 cloves of pressed garlic, and salt and pepper.

Ingredients including a pile of golden potatoes, garlic, shredded cheese, whipping cream, salt and pepper

How to Make these Scalloped Potatoes

First, preheat the oven to 400°.

Rinse and scrub the potatoes clean. Then, peel them and thinly slice them. If you are looking for a device to make this faster, try out this potato mandoline.

Bring the whipping cream and pressed garlic to a slow boil over medium-high heat in a saucepan.  While this is heating up, you can butter or spray a medium-sized baking pan, like this 10.5X 7.5 Staub, or an oval baking dish of your preference.

Shred 4-5 ounces of Gruyère cheese and set aside.

Once the whipping cream and garlic come to a boil, gently mix in the sliced potatoes.  Reduce the heat to medium. Cover and let cook until the liquid returns to a boil. This should take about 3-4 minutes.

Next scoop half of the potatoes into the baking dish. Sprinkle with salt and pepper generously.  Add half of the shredded Gruyère cheese to the top of the scalloped potatoes. Add the rest of the potatoes over the top, and sprinkle with salt and pepper generously. Then add the remaining cheese to the top.

Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes at 400° (potatoes should be tender). Remove the foil and broil until the top of the potatoes are golden brown (about 10 minutes). Remove from the oven and let stand for about 10 minutes before serving.
