Fun Fact:  The original chocolate martini has a rich taste and history, bringing nostalgia for old Hollywood grace and charm. It is said (per foodrepublic.com) that Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor invented the chocolate martini in 1955 while on the set of the movie Giant, set in our home state of Texas. Other resources, like tastingtable.com, report these two celebs only made the drink famous by frequently ordering them.

Black Cherry Chocolate Martini Ingredients

There are 3 main ingredients and ice to make this decadent martini.  All you will need is black cherry vodka, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and chocolate liqueur.  There are many chocolate liqueurs out there, so our advice is to take a look at a liquor store that has a larger selection. Godiva is a great brand, but there are also other delicious Italian chocolate liqueurs.  Many folks add chocolate syrup to this martini, but we think it is just perfect without it.

Garnishes include dark cherries (we love these Waterford Bourbon Cherries) and dark chocolate shavings. If you plan to add chocolate shavings to the rim as an optional garnish and visual appeal, you will need an apple slice or simple syrup to moisten the rim of the glass

How to Make this Martini

First, we recommend frosting your glass but quickly rinsing a martini glass with water and putting it in the freezer while you mix the ingredients. Or you can fill an empty martini glass with ice water and rest it on the counter to chill while you mix the drink.

You will need a shot glass and a martini shaker.  Fill the shaker with ice.  Measure 3 ounces of dark cherry vodka, 2 ounces of Bailey’s Irish Cream, and 2 ounces of chocolate liqueur and pour into the shaker. Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is ice cold.

Grate dark chocolate into small shavings to cover a small plate.  Moisten the rim of the martini glass with simple syrup or an apple slice and then turn the glass upside down onto the chocolate shavings to line the rim.

If prechilling your glass, remove it from the freezer or pour out the ice water.  Then, pour the martini shaker contents through the straining feature of the shaker into the glass. Sprinkle more chocolate shavings on top, add dark cherries, and serve.
