The Fresh Goodness of the Ingredients

This delicious margarita is mixed with all fresh ingredients and no pre-made mixes. Sweetened with agave nectar versus artificial sugars, we feel this is a healthier margarita choice.   All you need is limes, lemons, mandarins, silver tequila, agave nectar, and Cointreau – or an orange flavor liquor like Triple Sec or Grand Marnier.  I prefer Cointreau but all of them will make a great margarita.

Using lemons and mandarins in addition to the limes, balances out the bitterness of the lime, making the combination of the citrus smoother in flavor.

Tequila, Cointreau, Agave Syrup, limes, lemons, and a container of salt The How to for this Margarita…

For 1 margarita, you’ll need 1 lime (2 if they’re small), 1/2 of a lemon, and 1/2 of a mandarin or clementine if available.  Squeeze or muddle all of the juice out of the lime, 1/2 lemon, and 1/2 mandarin into your shaker.  Measure 2.5 oz of silver tequila, a squeeze of agave, and 1 ounce of Cointreau into your cocktail shaker.

Fill the shaker with ice.  Shake until the shaker is freezing cold and pour into your salty glass.  CHEERS!

Tips to Tailor this Fresh Cocktail

  • If you prefer your margarita on the less sweet side, skip the Cointreau and tailor the amount of the agave syrup.  For my “less sweet” friends, I do the same amount of agave but skip the Cointreau.
  • If you want salt on the rim of the glass, rub a lime wedge (even the one you just squeezed) around the edge of the glass.  Pour salt onto a small plate, then dip the glass rim in the salt.

The When to for this Best Margarita…

The answer is, of course, any happy hour time! We tend to make these with warmer weather, serve for friends, or just an at-home date night with our husbands.  But we always have one when we get together!

Chips with salsa and this Fresh and Easy Guacamole make a nice appetizer treat to compliment this margarita.  If you are looking for a main dish that is complemented by a fresh margarita, try this Grilled Flank Steak with Chimichurri Sauce or this A&W Steak Sandwich with Garlic Aoli.
