The Ginger Turmeric Shot Ingredients

This recipe requires 1 large red apple, 2 whole, large carrots, 1 orange, 1 pound of fresh ginger, 12 ounces of fresh turmeric, 2 lemons, and honey (one squirt per shot for natural sweetness to balance out the tangy citrus, ginger, and turmeric flavor). Ginger

Ginger root is no ordinary root! According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, ginger has many health benefits.  Not only does ginger assist with digestion and intestinal functioning, but it is also an antioxidant. Antioxidants are critical for managing cell health. There are also studies suggesting that ginger has many anti-inflammatory compounds.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a cousin (or close relative of) ginger. So it is no surprise that it also contains health benefits.  According to WebMD, turmeric has been used for centuries in Southeast Asia to treat medical conditions, such as breathing difficulties.  Today, studies suggest that turmeric contains compounds that can fight inflammation which is responsible for many diseases and ailments. (see this Healthline.com article for more details.)

Apples, Carrots, and Lemons, oh my….

This produce trio provides tons of vitamin C and B vitamins, as well as fiber.  Vitamin C is known for its role in immunity, in fact, according to MayoClinic, it is “vital to the body’s healing process”.  According to MedlinePlus, B vitamins are critical for maintaining our body’s energy levels. And well, we know we need fiber to maintain digestive health and that oh-so-coveted “regularity”.

How to Make these Ginger Turmeric Shots

Use a Juicer:

We recommend using a juicer, like this Breville Juice Fountain Plus from Amazon, for making these health-boosting shots.  A juicer is preferred as it easily separates the pulp and unnecessary parts of the produce while squeezing out the rest for the shots.  I have prepared it in a blender before, however, it is less time-efficient and requires much more clean-up.

Tips on Using Turmeric:  When making anything with fresh turmeric, you need to be careful as it has a lovely bright orange color which can stain your clothes, countertops, sink and etc.  You may want to wear an apron or old t-shirt and cover your countertops.  Just make sure to clean everything right after making the shots to be sure bright orange turmeric juice is not lingering anywhere.  Dish soap with a scrubby side of the sponge can usually get out the spots on the countertop if it splatters.  To be safe, you can use an old towel, disposable tablecloth, or flatten out a trash bag underneath the juicer and your work area, to protect your countertop.

Making the Ginger Turmeric Shots:

Ginger being brushed with a vegetable brush First, use a vegetable brush to brush any loose dirt from the ginger and turmeric roots.  Then place all the produce in a large bowl of water to soak and clean them.  Let them soak in the water for 10 minutes up to 1 hour.   Remove them from the water brush off any remaining dirt and place them on a kitchen towel to dry.

Next, cut the peel off the orange and lemons, leaving just the fruit.  Cut the apple into large chunks. There is no need to peel the apple, carrots, ginger, or turmeric unless you want to.

Now, put each piece of the produce through the juicer.  This should yield approximately 16 ounces of juice, which can be divided into 7 – 8, 2-ounce shots.

Storage for the Ginger Turmeric Shots

You can store this juice in a variety of ways.  You could use one large glass carafe, like this one on Amazon.  Then, store the carafe in the refrigerator.  Each day, use a squirt of honey in the bottom of a glass and then pour a 2-ounce serving from the carafe.  Stir to mix the honey and juice before enjoying.

If you have the space in your refrigerator, a convenient alternative is to use these small 2-ounce Mason Jars with Lids.  After the juice is ready, squeeze a small amount (1 T) of honey into the bottom of each glass.  Then put the lids on and refrigerate. Before enjoying each Ginger Tumeric Shot, shake it quickly before drinking it to mix the honey with the juice.  If you drink a shot just after making it, I like to add a couple of cubes of ice, as it tastes best when cold.

  • Easier Clean-Up Tip: Use a small plastic grocery store sack and place it into the pulp container of your juicer, then put it in place just like normal.  This creates an easier clean-up when everything is finished.
  • These health-boosting ginger turmeric shots are meant to be a daily addition to your vitamin regimen. One per day for about 8 days.  These are safely stored for this amount of time, but not much longer.
