Did you know that mousse is a French word that translates to the word “foam”?  It makes sense, as this dessert is smooth and light.  But the flavor is rich and creamy at the same time. Interestingly, the history of mousse is much more complex than making the dessert itself.  According to The Food Historian, recipes resembling that of mousse today date back to the 1600s in Central America! It was from there that Europeans adopted and adapted the recipe to what we are more familiar with today.

Simple & Rich Chocolate Mousse Ingredients

This delicious mousse recipe has only four ingredients!  You will need two cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips, two eggs, 1 tablespoon of vanilla (or substitute with Grand Marnier or Kahlúa, depending on your flavor preferences), and two cups of heavy whipping cream. You will also need a blender for this recipe.

How to Make this Chocolate Mousse

This dish only takes 5 minutes to prepare, but it will need to be refrigerated for at least one hour before serving.

First, add the chocolate chips, eggs, and vanilla (or Grand Marnier or Kahlúa) to the blender.

Then, in a small saucepan, heat the whipping cream slowly until bubbles appear at the edge, and ONLY at the edge.  Medium heat should be sufficient, but if your stove tends to cook hot, adjust accordingly!  You do not want the cream to scald or to cook too quickly.

Next, start to mix the ingredients that are in the blender.  While the blender is mixing, add warmed cream gradually. Blend until all of the ingredients are combined well.

Now, pour the mousse into individual serving dishes, glasses, or ramekins. This recipe makes about 6 servings of chocolate mousse.

Put the mousse cups/ dishes into the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving, allowing it to set.  Serve cold as is or garnish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings or a long wafer cookie, such as a pirouette.

Serving Tips for this Simple & Rich Chocolate Mousse

  • If substituting vanilla with Grand Marnier, it will have a slight hint of orange citrus flavor. If you were to try Kahlúa, it would have a hint of buttery/ coffee flavor.
  • The chocolate mousse may keep for up to 3- 4 days in the fridge if covered tightly.  So, to make this dessert even easier, you can make it a day ahead for guests or a special occasion!
  • To make chocolate shavings or curls for the topping, just purchase your favorite chocolate bar (we love Ghirardelli dark chocolate).  Use a vegetable peeler to carve curls off of a room-temperature chocolate bar.
  • For another fancy effect, add a pirouette, lacey, or your favorite cookie to compliment it.
